Weapons
In Aikido, weapons’ training is not used for inflicting injury. Its primary purpose is for the improvement and understanding of correct body movement, a strong sense of timing, spatial awareness, and connection with a partner; to learn to stay in sync with a partner, while the weapon becomes a natural extension of one’s own body.
Jo, Bokken & Tanto
Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, was adept with sword and staff, and he often demonstrated that Aikido techniques could be executed either empty-handed or with the tanto (knife) bokken (wooden sword) or the Jo (staff).
Many Aikido techniques owe their shapes and form to weapons usage, especially the Japanese sword. Thus understanding the weapon helps our understanding of our technique and vice versa.
Class training includes kata (form), kumitachi (sword partner practise), kumijo (staff partner practise), weapons taking, weapons retention and open hand defence against weapons.
